Summer Snake Safety

Tourism Australia is warning those on Australian extreme sports holidays to be wary of venemous snakes as temperatures soar this coming summer. Snakes and lizards and other reptiles are a fascinating part of the urban wildlife scene. Several species are regulars — just not commonly seen — and they all play an important role in our ecology. Snakes are likely to be active over summer as they look for mates and food to replenish their energy after their inactivity during winter. Left alone, reptiles present little or no danger to people.

Most visitors bitten by snakes have threatened the snake by interfering with it or trying to kill it. If left alone for a period, the snake will move on. Residents who see snake indoors should open external doors and windows, close bedroom doors to the area the snake is in, and place door snakes or rolled towels against the bottom of those doors.
